The Fernley High School volleyball team swept Dayton last Friday, winning 25-10, 25-23, 25-18 to improve to 4-1 in Northern 3A East play and 20-5 overall. The victory sets up a key rematch with league-leading Fallon (4-0) this Friday in Fernley. Trista Menesini led the Vaqueros with 12 kills and five aces, while Emma Masters added six kills. Grace Chapin contributed four blocks, and Alauna Escartin tallied 16 assists. “We played the best we have in two weeks,” said coach Diane Chapin. “We limited mistakes and ran a good offense.” Friday’s 6 p.m. matchup could determine first place in the league standings heading into the final stretch of the season. 10/09/2025 09:02 PM

Fernley City Council to hold public hearings on development, zoning changes
The Fernley City Council will hold three public hearings next week following first readings of proposed ordinances on Oct. 1. One hearing will cover changes to the 161-acre Red Hawk Ranch Development Agreement, including extending subdivision map expirations, adding all property owners, and relocating the community park. Two additional hearings will address zoning changes — one proposal to rezone 25 acres near Farm District Road from rural residential to single-family (SF6), and another to rezone the city’s planned 23-acre fishing pond park at 2305 Farm District Road from residential to Open Space and Parks (OSP). 10/09/2025 08:45 PM

Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent, relevant coursework or experience, and the ability to obtain an International Code Council certification within a year of hire. 10/09/2025 08:39 PM

Council approves “Cocktails to go” ordinance
Fernley restaurants with liquor licenses can now offer “cocktails to go” under a new ordinance approved by the City Council on Oct. 1. The measure allows 22 local restaurants to provide sealed alcoholic beverages for takeout or home delivery without obtaining a new license. City Clerk Kim Swanson said the change, made possible by Assembly Bill 375, could create a new revenue stream for local establishments. Drinks must be sealed with a tamper-evident cap, and open containers in vehicles remain illegal. Delivery drivers must be licensed, verify recipients are at least 21, and log all deliveries for four years. A 50-cent surcharge per drink will support the state’s Ignition Interlock & DUI Reduction Program. 10/09/2025 08:26 PM
