Cancer Screening Isn’t Difficult – Don’t Put it Off
Learning that a friend in her 40s had colon cancer was devastating. Despite bravely fighting and even celebrating being cancer-free, the disease came back and took her far too soon—leaving behind her husband and two young sons. Her story reinforced for me just how ruthless colon cancer can be and why early detection matters. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Nevada, yet it’s highly treatable when caught early. Unfortunately, over 31% of adults over 45 are behind on recommended screenings. New, less invasive options like the FDA-approved Shield blood test make it easier than ever to stay on track. I encourage everyone to prioritize cancer screenings—for yourself and those you love. Learn more at cancer.org or talk with your healthcare provider. Early detection saves lives. — Randi Thompson, Public Relations Consultant, Reno

Boys soccer team beats Fallon for first win of season
The Fernley High School boys soccer team earned its first win of the season with a 2-1 comeback victory over Fallon last Saturday. Trailing 1-0 at halftime, Todd Wickenden and Jesus Infante scored in the second half to secure the win. Fernley is now fourth in Northern 3A East with a 1-3-1 league record and 1-9-3 overall. The Vaqueros play at West Wendover Friday at 3:45 p.m. and at Elko Saturday at 11:45 a.m. The girls soccer team fell 8-0 to Fallon last week, dropping to 0-4 in league play. They will host Lowry at noon Saturday.

Vaqueros charge into showdown with Fallon
The Fernley Vaqueros are gearing up for what could be the biggest game of the season, hosting Fallon Friday night with a chance to tie for first place in the Northern 3A. Fernley enters the game 4-1 in league play and 6-1 overall, tied for second with Elko, while Fallon leads the league at 5-0. A Truckee win over Elko during Fernley’s bye week kept the Vaqueros in the hunt for the No. 1 seed. A win over Fallon, followed by victories against Lowry and Dayton, could secure the top seed if Fallon beats Elko next week. Even a loss to Fallon could still allow Fernley to earn a home playoff game depending on remaining results.
