Facing three Las Vegas-area schools and one from the Northern 4A, the Fernley High School girls soccer team came away with one win in four tries at the South Tahoe Boys and Girls Soccer Tournament Aug. 14-15.
The Vaqueros beat Somerset Academy Losee of North Las Vegas 4-1 in their second game of the tournament on Friday.
Faith Mhondo had one goal and one assist, while Reese Johnson, Bronwynn Garrett and Sophie Mossner each scored a goal for Fernley. Sabrina Portillo, Judisa Gonzalez and Zaelynn Wasson each had one assist.
Goaltender Lilliana Perez made five saves.
Fernley opened the tournament with a 4-0 loss to Foothill (Henderson), which plays in the Southern 5A.
Foothill scored two goals in each half. Perez again made five saves for Fernley, and the Vaqueros had six shots on goal.
On Saturday, Fernley lost 4-1 to Southeast Career Tech of the Southern 4A and 5-0 to McQueen of the Northern 4A.
Tillie Gillespie scored Fernley’s goal against SECTA on an assist by Genesis Ramirez Martinez. Three Fernley goaltenders combined for 10 saves, with seven by Angie Rosas Rodriguez.
Rosas Rodriguez made 17 saves against a McQueen team that peppered the Fernley defense with 27 shots. Fernley managed two shots, neither of which were on goal.
This week the Vaqueros were scheduled to host Debbie Smith CTE Academy at 4:45 p.m. Thursday, then next Tuesday they play at Wooster at 4:45 p.m.
