The Lowry High School boys soccer team opened its season this past weekend with a two-day tournament in South Lake Tahoe. The Buckaroos played four matches, with three of those against 5A or 4A schools.
The opening day of the tourney saw Lowry drop a 1-0 decision to Foothill but rallying with a 5-0 victory over Fernley. Foothill, a member of the Southern 4A Desert Division, scored the lone goal in the second half to win.
In the second match on Friday, Lowry rolled to shutout victory over league foe Fernley. The Buckaroos’ Johny Leon was named the man of the match with two goals and an assist. Josue Barajas, a junior, netted himself a hat trick.
Cris Arriola, Davis Becerra and Kale Garcia added assists.
In Saturday’s opener for the Buckaroos, they faced Spanish Springs of the Northern 5A and played to a 2-2 tie with the Cougars. Arriola found the net for both goals, in his first goals of the season. Jonathan Leon and Becera had assists.
Lowry wrapped up the two days, with a 309 loss to Reed, also of the Northern 5A. The Raiders reached the semifinals of the Northern 5A regional tournament in 2025.
Lowry finds itself back in Lake Tahoe this weekend, beginning 3A crossover play at North Tahoe on Friday at 4:45 p.m. and Truckee on Saturday at 11:45 a.m. North Tahoe reached the state tournament a season ago.
The crossover games mean more this season, as the playoff format has changed with the league returning to a point system for the postseason seeding.
