This summer, 46 youths from high schools in Lyon County are participating in the annual
Comstock Youth Works (CYW) program. Students have been connected with paid internships
and they'll participate in career exploration field trips and life skills lessons such as banking
basics.
The Comstock Youth Works program is sponsored by the Healthy Communities Coalition (HCC)
of Lyon and Storey Counties. The program equips high school students with tools for personal
growth and offers opportunities for hands on experience through summer job internships.
Participants take part in activities designed to enhance their employability, foster independence
and prepare them for future success in the workforce.
Many local businesses partnered with HCC to host students for the summer. Students work 15
hours a week with employers such as the Boys & Girls Clubs, Pizza Factory, Lyon County
libraries and senior centers among many others. In addition to gaining real world work
experience, students participate in various college and career exploration field trips and fun
outings that promote positive leisure activities.
On their first field trip of the summer, students made tie dye shirts, learned about banking from
Greater Nevada Credit Union ahead of earning their first paychecks and learned about safe
driving through a Zero Teen Fatalities presentation by the Nevada Department of Public Safety.
Students also participate in weekly enrichment lessons with HCC's safe school professionals,
such as the evidence based Too Good for Drugs and Violence curriculum and Eating Smart
Being Active classes that teach good nutrition, kitchen skills, the benefits of exercise and grocery
shopping on a budget. HCC's Comstock Youth Works eight-week summer program empowers
teens by providing essential support for developing life and job skills.
