The Rotary Club of Fernley served more than 300 free meals at its community Thanksgiving Dinner at the Wigwam and delivered about 100 more to home-bound residents last Thursday.

The meals were prepared and served by the staff of the Wigwam, the Rotary Club of Fernley, volunteers from the community and the Leadership class at Fernley High School.

Roy Edgington, who helped organize the event, said 24 turkeys were donated for this year’s dinner.

“I think it went pretty well,” Edgington said. “I really can’t thank those guys enough.”

This was the second year the Community Thanksgiving Dinner has been served at the Wigwam, and owner Victor Serna said the turnout was significantly higher than last year.

“We love doing these kinds of events and bringing happiness to the community,” Serna said. “Hopefully everyone will be back next year.”

The free Community Thanksgiving began in 2011 and came from the inspiration of a then 10-year old, Sarah Jean Gleason, who felt that everyone should feel like part of a family on Thanksgiving.

In the first photo, the woman in the middle, wearing the black shirt, is SaraH Jean Gleason. She is not an FHS Leadership Student but is the person who is responsible (with the help of her father) for starting the Fernley Community Thanksgiving Dinner in 2011. She attended this year's dinner while home from Arizona State University, where she is working on her PhD.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
