Fernley boys win first cross country meet

With four of the top seven finishers, the Fernley High School boys cross country team opened the season by winning the Fernley 4K last Friday.

Cael Wilson was the first Fernley runner to cross the finish line, taking third place with a time of 14:08. Joe Perkins finished fifth with a time of 4:17, Zachary Petersen came in sixth with a time of 14:44 and Dominick Dietrich was seventh with a time of 15:15. Alex Mergell finished 11th with a time of 15.46.

That gave the boys a team score of 32 points, easily beating second-place Fallon, which had 71. 

Only three schools field full teams and the Fernley girls finished third with 54 points. Fallon had 33 points, and Battle Mountain scored 35.

Corbyn Gillespie was the fastest finisher for Fernley, in seventh place with a time of 18:48. Wynter Angus placed 21st with a time of 21:36, Regan Scott finished 23rd with a time of 21:40, Jojo Cardinal came in 29th in 22:48 and Grace Schmidtlein finished in 24:39 to place 33rd.

A total of 81 runners competed in the boys race, with 41 in the girls.

Friday the Vaqueros are scheduled to run in the North Tahoe Madman Mills Motivational, in North Lake Tahoe. The event begins at noon with five races for freshman boys, frosh/soph girls, sophomore boys, varsity girls and varsity boys.
