Council approves bike path extension
At its Oct. 1 meeting, the Fernley City Council approved a $360,740 contract with Lumos & Associates for the design and construction management of Phase 3 of the bike path along the south side of Farm District Road. Phase 3 will fill a 0.3-mile gap between Jasmine Lane and Hendrix Drive and extend the path 0.3 miles east to Clearwater Parkway. Once completed, the bike path will offer approximately 3.7 miles of continuous trail from Villa Way to Clearwater Parkway. Construction, funded by the federal Transportation Alternative Program, is expected to begin by next fall. The city’s Transportation Master Plan calls for the path to eventually reach East Valley Elementary School and ultimately Highway 50A.

Court denies motion to withdraw guilty plea by man charged with selling fatal fentanyl dose
Third Judicial District Court Judge Leon Aberasturi on Oct. 7 denied Joseph Rose Tyler Maciel’s request to withdraw his guilty plea in the second-degree murder case involving the sale of fentanyl that killed Michael Fernandez. Maciel had argued ineffective assistance of counsel and claimed new evidence suggesting someone else supplied the drugs. Judge Aberasturi ruled that Maciel understood the charges, penalties, and rights he waived and found no deficient performance by his attorney. Sentencing is set for Oct. 20.

Cancer Screening Isn’t Difficult – Don’t Put it Off
Learning that a friend in her 40s had colon cancer was devastating. Despite bravely fighting and even celebrating being cancer-free, the disease came back and took her far too soon—leaving behind her husband and two young sons. Her story reinforced for me just how ruthless colon cancer can be and why early detection matters. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in Nevada, yet it’s highly treatable when caught early. Unfortunately, over 31% of adults over 45 are behind on recommended screenings. New, less invasive options like the FDA-approved Shield blood test make it easier than ever to stay on track. I encourage everyone to prioritize cancer screenings—for yourself and those you love. Learn more at cancer.org or talk with your healthcare provider. Early detection saves lives. — Randi Thompson, Public Relations Consultant, Reno
