At the Oct. 1 meeting of the Lyon County Commission, Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope presented Deputy Benjamin Wheeler with a Life Saving Award in recognition of his quick response and actions that saved the life of an inmate attempting suicide.

In the letter nominating Wheeler for the award, LCSO Sgt. Zachary Westbrook wrote that on Sept. 3, Wheeler intervened after observing an inmate attempting suicide inside a jail cell. Westbrook wrote that the inmate had tied a sheet around a metal bunk and his neck.

Wheeler immediately entered the cell and removed the sheet from the inmate’s neck, preventing the attempt from being completed. The inmate was subsequently evaluated by medical staff and received psychiatric care.

Westbrook wrote that in a later interview, the inmate said he waited for deputies to leave the pod after serving lunch and then attempted suicide.

It smells like sewage and it can be bad enough that people don’t want to be outside or open their windows. It would be helpful to get an investigative journalist help the Fernley residents get a clear answer from the City, NDEP, and any involved facilities. I was really disappointed that the smell was not disclosed by my realtor when I moved here. I enjoy Fernley and am seeing the improvements that are being made.
