The North Lyon County Fire Protection District Chief Brian Bunn and the district’s Board of Directors agreed March 30 to extend his contract for 90 days rather than approve a new contract because of an unexpected increase in workers’ compensation.
At a special meeting on March 30, Bunn said he was notified earlier that day that the district’s workers’ compensation carrier, 7710 Insurance, will close June 30. He said he anticipates an increase between $150,000 and $175,000 in workers’ compensation, which he said was the amount the district was saving per year through 7710.
Bunn said recent legislation that expands heart, lung and cancer presumptions for firefighters will result in massive workers’ compensation claims for insurance companies.
Because of the expected cost increase, Bunn requested the 90-day extension of his contract, giving the district time to determine its revenue projections for the 2026-27 budget.
“That still leaves money to negotiate with labor,” he said.
The Fire Board voted to extend Bunn’s contract for 90 days, and to reschedule the agenda item on a new contract to its June meeting.
