The Fernley High School volleyball team won both of its matches last week to maintain first place in the Northern 3A East heading into showdowns with the two teams right behind in the division race.
The Vaqueros defeated Fallon on Oct. 8, Fallon 24-26, 26-24, 27-25, 25-15
Trista Menesini led with 13 kills and four blocks, Emma Masters added 12 kills and Alauna Escartin finished with 32 assists, nine digs and six kills. Fernley totaled 40 kills in the match.
Jocelyn Escartin had 15 digs, Maddison Hill eight and Tatiana Velazquez six for the Vaqueros.
“The girls did a great job after losing a first close set, coming back and wining two close sets and then dominating the fourth set for the match win,” coach Diane Chapin said. “Defensively we made good adjustments to shut down Fallon's best hitter and found holes in their defense.”
On Saturday, the Vaqueros swept Lowry 25-19, 25-20, 25-18.
Masters had 13 kills, Menesini nine, Alauna Escartin posted 28 assists and 10 digs. Jocelyn Escartin added 10 digs.
Chapin said Lowry challenged the Vaqueros throughout.
“We were trailing in all of the sets at one point and found ways to come back,” she said. “Defensively we were very scrappy. I don’t feel it was our best day offensively. We didn't stay aggressive.”
Fernley is 6-1 in Northern 3A East, 20-7 overall, and is tied with West Division leader South Tahoe with 16 total points in the standings.
This week the Vaqueros will try to maintain their division lead when they host Spring Creek at 6 p.m. Thursday and Elko at 6 p.m. Friday. Both teams are 4-2 in the East and tied for second place.
“We have two tough matches this week with Spring Creek and Elko and will have to limit our mistakes and get aggressive,” Chapin said.
