Pyramid Lake collects first win in wild, high-scoring game at McDermitt

Pyramid Lake collects first win in wild, high-scoring game at McDermitt

Eight-man football is played on a smaller field but it looked like McDermitt and Pyramid Lake was playing indoor arena football.

On a clear, warm day on the Oregon/Nevada border, offense was at a premium as the teams combined for 50 points in 15 minutes and 74 points in the first 19 minutes of the opening half. Pyramid Lake held McDermitt scoreless in the second half on its way to an 82-30 victory. The Lakers had scored just 30 points in the first four games.

“Great first win for a young team, said Pyramid Lake coach Brian Borden. “A lot of great in-game experience for the younger group that has a really bright future the next few years at Pyramid Lake. One of our freshmen running backs, Kyree Phoenix, had a showcase game. He really showed some great quickness and vision when carrying the ball.”

Pyramid Lake scored twice in a minute in the first quarter, starting with a 7-yard pass from Bradley Lara to Phoenix. Moments later, Troy Azzie grabbed the ball from McDermitt punter Dezmund Crutcher and ran in for six points and a 14-0 lead with 7:58 left in the opening quarter.

With three minutes left in the first quarter, the Bulldogs got on the board on a 35-yard pass from Treal Scott to Riley Kelly. On the ensuing kickoff, the Braves struck again, as Phoenix broke free for a 66-yard kickoff and then on the first play of the second quarter, Lara hit Bejamin Eben for a short touchdown pass and a 28-6 advantage with nine seconds gone in the second quarter.

The ping-pong contest continued, with McDermitt striking again on a touchdown pass from Scott to Hunter, when Pyramid Lake scored twice more — the first on a run by Phoenix and an interception return by Uriah Coffman to put the Braves ahead 44-14 with 5:46 left in the first half.

McDermitt put one more touchdown up before the end of the quarter on a run by Ethan Alexander.

“The OLine has really improved and that is evident by how two backs had a big day,” Borden said. “One of our only seniors, (quarterback) Bradley Lara who went from OLine his sophomore year to tight-end last year to taking snaps his final year. He showed a lot of composure in his passing decisions.

Following halftime, it was all Pyramid Lake, as Troy Yazzie had three rushing touchdowns in the second half, with Lara getting one for himself as well.

“The defense settled in and kept McDermitt off the score board second half,” added the coach.

McDermitt, who dropped to 0-6 on the season travels to Hawthorne on Friday and Pyramid Lake hosts Eureka on Friday at 7 p.m.

For a large municipal facility like the indoor-outdoor Fernley Swimming Pool located at 300 Cottonwood Lane, a complete ground-up commercial build or major structural renovation typically spans 6 to 12 months or longer when factoring in large-scale engineering, public municipal permitting, specialized commercial HVAC/roofing, and health department inspections. It smells like sewage and it can be bad enough that people don’t want to be outside or open their windows. It would be helpful to get an investigative journalist help the Fernley residents get a clear answer from the City, NDEP, and any involved facilities. I was really disappointed that the smell was not disclosed by my realtor when I moved here. I enjoy Fernley and am seeing the improvements that are being made.
