A day after being chosen as the next executive director of the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association, Todd Cutler announced that that he and the NIAA were unable to agree on contract terms and he would not be taking the position.
After interviewing the three finalists for the position during its Sept. 23 meeting at Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, the NIAA Board voted 7-5 to name Cutler as the next executive director.
But on Sept. 24, Cutler said he would not be accepting the position.
“The NIAA and I were unable to come to agreement and I will not be accepting the role,” Cutler said in an email statement to Range Media.
Before the vote, Chairman Alex Woodley requested the Board vote on a second choice in case its first choice didn’t take the position. Woodley said he was involved in the hiring process of a Reno Police Chief in 2022 and said the candidate chosen for that position did not accept the position, but the committee had voted on a second choice.
“I would recommend that we at least identify number one and number two in case we do have a situation with our first choice that we don't have to start all over again,” Woodley said.
The NIAA Board voted 12-0 to approve NIAA Assistant Director Cate Sgroi as the second choice. As of Tuesday, the NIAA had not responded to an inquiry on whether it and Sgroi had reached an agreement.
Before voting 7-5 in favor of Cutler, a motion to choose Sgroi as the executive director had failed in a 6-6 tie.
