After winning a nonleague match against Smith Valley on Sept. 22, the Fernley High School volleyball team split two matches on its eastern road trip to Elko and Spring Creek.
The Vaqueros began their week by beating Smith Valley 25-23, 25-13, 20-25, 25-22.
Trista Menesini tallied 21 kills, Grace Chapin added nine kills and three blocks and Emma Masters had six kills and 15 digs. Alauna Escartin set up the attack with 37 assists and Jocelyn Escartin received 35 serves and made 20 digs.
The Vaqueros started their weekend trip with a 25-19, 20-25, 25-22, 25-22 win at Elko.
Menesini had 21 kills, 10 digs and three blocks, Masters added 12 kills and Chapin contributed seven kills and three blocks. Jocelyn Escartin had 22 digs and Alauna Escartin matched Tuesday’s effort with 37 digs.
Spring Creek spoiled the Vaqueros hopes of a road sweep on Saturday, beating Fernley 26-24, 17-25, 25-23, 18-25, 15-9.
Menesini had 19 kills, Chapin added nine and Masters had seven, with Alauna Escartin tallying 41 assists.
Coach Diane Chapin said the Vaqueros played two very tough matches against good teams.
“We played well both offensively and defensively against Elk. The one set we lost was due to our errors,” she said. “Saturday at Spring Creek, even though we lost the match the girls played great on defense. I felt we could have been more aggressive on offense.”
The split left the Vaqueros with an 18-7 overall record and in a tie with Elko for second place at 2-1 in the Northern 3A East, behind Fallon, which is 2-0.
Fernley was scheduled to host Fallon on Tuesday evening, then play at Dayton at 5 p.m. Friday.
