With the regional meet coming up Oct. 5-6 in Lake Tahoe and Truckee, the Fernley girls golf team used last week’s tournaments in Fallon and Fernley to sharpen individual rounds and position two golfers for potential state qualification.
At Fallon on Sept. 21, Brylee Harry led Fernley with a 103, and Hailey Hall finished at 130. Izzy Martinez shot 128 and Scarlet Garvin 134, giving Fernley a 495 for fifth place. Elko edged Truckee for the team win, 392–398, and Elko’s Caitlyn Nielson was the low medalist with an 88.
On Sept. 22 at Fernley, Hall shot 94 to lead the Vaqueros. Harry finished at 107, Martinez at 115, Garvin at 117 and Ainsley Blackorby at 121. Fernley totaled 433 for sixth place. Truckee won with a 373, seven strokes ahead of Elko, and Allison Mortimeyer was the low medalist with a 69.
Coach Brian O’Neill said the team continues to trend upward.
“I’m proud of the ladies getting better each tournament,” he said. “I’m excited to see Brylee and Hailey both do well last week. They’ve positioned themselves to make a run at qualifying as individuals for the state tournament. I hope the team has a good week of practice before our last two events at South Lake Tahoe and Truckee.”
The individual with the lowest score not already on a qualifying team is guaranteed a spot in the state tournament. Additional golfers up to a maximum of six may advance to state only if they shoot a qualifying score of an average of 35-over-par per round.
