A recent Fernley Estates Senior Living outing to Topaz Lake brought residents together for a day on the water — and for Ginger, it brought a lifetime of memories rushing back.

Fernley Estates took a group of residents to Topaz Lake for a day of riding personal watercraft, giving them the chance to get outside, enjoy an adventure and make new memories together. Several residents joined in the fun, but Ginger’s story made the day especially meaningful.

The outing also included a picnic lunch provided by Minden Meat and Deli, helping make the day even more special for residents. The local support was a perfect addition to an afternoon centered on fun, friendship and making memories together.

Ginger’s connection to the water began when she was a teenager in Fresno, California. At 17, she was a member of her high school diving team. After graduation, she turned that love of the water into something even more adventurous, performing as a demonstration water-skier and showgirl at events promoting Mercury Motors along the West Coast.

After marriage, Ginger continued enjoying the water with her family, including vacations to Puerto Vallarta with her husband and daughter. Through every chapter of her life, the water remained a place of joy and freedom.

“I love the feel and buoyancy of the waves,” she said. “It makes me feel alive!”

That same spirit was easy to see on the water. Decades after her water-skiing days, Ginger was back where she has always felt most alive — smiling and enjoying the ride.

Ginger has called Fernley Estates home for two years. She is outgoing, active in community outings, quick to build friendships with other residents and almost always has a smile on her face.

The outing was about more than one resident or one afternoon. It was an opportunity for residents to keep trying things, revisiting old passions and enjoying life together — whether that means a familiar experience from years ago or an entirely new adventure.

At Fernley Estates, that is the goal: to create opportunities for residents to stay connected to the things that make them feel most like themselves.

For Ginger, that just happens to include a little speed, a lot of water and one very big smile.

For a large municipal facility like the indoor-outdoor Fernley Swimming Pool located at 300 Cottonwood Lane, a complete ground-up commercial build or major structural renovation typically spans 6 to 12 months or longer when factoring in large-scale engineering, public municipal permitting, specialized commercial HVAC/roofing, and health department inspections. The current renovation has been- The Fernley Swimming Pool has been closed for approximately six to seven months since late February 2026 for a major roof replacement and facility renovation. Now you sat October. Soooo 8 months for a new roof. The picture shows no other renovations. It smells like sewage and it can be bad enough that people don’t want to be outside or open their windows. It would be helpful to get an investigative journalist help the Fernley residents get a clear answer from the City, NDEP, and any involved facilities. I was really disappointed that the smell was not disclosed by my realtor when I moved here. I enjoy Fernley and am seeing the improvements that are being made.
