The Pyramid Lake High School volleyball team defeated Carlin in three sets Saturday, using long scoring runs in each set to secure the win.
The Lakers finished the first set with 12 consecutive points, had a run of nine straight to end the second and then, after trailing in the third set, ran off 10 straight points as part of a 12-1 run to finish the win, 25-7, 25-7, 25-18.
Coach Raveon Harrowa said the team practices playing from behind so players stay calm in pressure situations.
“There’s no panic,” she said. “Panic is when you start making mistakes. You just have to play.”
She said serving was a strength, with the team producing several aces.
The first set was close through the first few service rotations for both teams, with the Lakers leading 8-6 before they scored five straight points. After Carlin scored one, the Lakers scored the next 12.
The Lakers started the second set with a 6-1 lead and gradually pulled away until closing with the last nine points. Carlin led by as much as 16-10 before the Lakers final closing push.
Harrowa said the team stayed composed even when momentum dipped.
“I thought my girls did really good,” she said. “They had spurts where they lost a little bit of energy, but they picked themselves up and did really well.”
The Lakers’ Sept. 19 match with Whittell was canceled and their scheduled Sept. 24 match with Coleville was moved up to Sept. 21. They were also scheduled to play at Excel Christian Sept. 22 and next Tuesday they host Hawthorne at 5 p.m.
