Behind an exceptional defensive effort, the Fernley High School girls soccer team earned a hard fought 0–0 draw against North Tahoe on Sept. 16, before falling 3–2 to Lowry last Saturday.
Against a North Tahoe team that is 5-0-3 and has outscored opponents 29-6, the Vaqueros’ defense held strong. Goalkeeper Lilliana Perez anchored the backline, finishing the match with 18 saves.
“They played really well during that game,” coach Tammie Valentine said, adding that the team stayed disciplined defensively, staying with their marks and doing their jobs.
The Vaqueros carried that strong play into first half of Saturday’s game against Lowry. Fernley built a 2–0 lead by halftime on goals by Bronwynn Garrett and Sophie Mossner, but Lowry rallied with three unanswered goals in the second half.
Valentine said Fernley lost some of its rhythm after the break.
“I think we kind of got a little ambitious and they kind of lost their stride,” she said.
Lowry scored the deciding goal on a late free kick with about 10 minutes remaining. Fernley had a chance to tie on a free kick of its own in the final minutes, but the shot missed the mark. Perez finished the game with 10 saves.
After three consecutive home games, the Vaqueros are back on the road this weekend, facing Spring Creek at 4:45 p.m. Friday and at Elko at 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
