In the 11th game of the season, the Fernley High School boys soccer team scored its first goal of the season but is still looking for its first win.
Matt McDowell found the back of the net with a shot in the first half of last Saturday’s game at West Wendover, giving the Vaqueros their first lead of the season, with their first goal. But West Wendover responded with two goals in the second half for 2-1 victory that kept the Vaqueros winless.
The day before, the Vaqueros lost 8-0 at Elko. The Indians scored five times in the first half and added three more in the second half.
“We had another rough weekend getting shut down by Elko on Friday. Saturday we had a better day; we lost 2-1 but played a much stronger game,” coach Angel Muniz said. “Our goalkeeper (Travis Lyle) saved us from many goals by getting 34 saves between both games.”
Last week’s game were the first two Northern 3A East games of the season for the Vaqueros, and they have only played one game at home so far. Fernley now hosts five of its next six games, starting Friday against Spring Creek at 1 p.m. and Saturday at 11:45 a.m. against Lowry.
