The City of Fernley Engineering Department announced that traffic and pedestrian sensors will be installed near Silverland Middle School as part of the city’s Safe Routes to School Action Plan.
LiDAR Matrix, a research group working with the Federal Highway Administration, will collect traffic and pedestrian movement data in areas identified as concerns.
The first sensors are scheduled to be installed near Silverland Middle School from Sept. 23 through Oct. 1.
According to the city, the sensors will not collect facial images or personally identifying information. The equipment will record only shapes and movement patterns.
The data will be used as part of the Safe Routes to School planning effort to better understand traffic and pedestrian activity around local schools.
