The Pyramid Lake High School volleyball team beat Sage Ridge in five sets and Mineral County in three for its first league wins of the season.
The Lakers took possession of second place with those wins at 2-1 in league play entering this week, behind Smith Valley, which is 4-0. Sage Ridge and Mineral County are both 2-2.
After Sage Ridge won the first set, the Lakers bounced back to win the next two, then finished the match with a strong fifth set to win 22-25, 25-19, 25-9, 20-25, 15-11.
The Lakers carried that momentum to Hawthorne, where they beat the Serpents 25-16, 25-17, 25-15. The Lakers were scheduled to host Virginia City Tuesday, before hosting Carlin at 5 p.m. Thursday. Next week, they are scheduled to play at Excel Christian at 5 p.m. Sept. 22 and host Coleville at 5 p.m. Sept. 24.
Football
The Lakers’ football team suffered a tough loss, 60-6, at Hawthorne. After a close first quarter ended with Hawthorne up 14-6, the Serpents scored 32 points in the second quarter to take control.
Pyramid Lake is scheduled to host Carlin this Thursday at 7 p.m.
Cross country
Pyramid Lake sent two runners to the 3rd Annual Cross Country@ The Ranch Twilight Invitational at Damonte Ranch, and got a strong performance out of freshman Jayar Chavez in the boys varsity race. Chavez finished 17th with a time of 18:51.79. Junior John Kelly also ran well, finishing 35th with his time of 21:02.24.
This week the Lakers are scheduled to run in the Battle of the Rattle 5K race on Saturday at Rattlesnake Mountain in Reno.
