After finishing up crossover play against West Division of the Northern 3A earlier this week, the Fernley High School volleyball team opens league play Friday night.
The Vaqueros won two crossover matches last week, beating South Tahoe 16-25, 27-25, 14-25, 25-17, 15-3 on Sept. 8, then winning in three sets over Incline on Sept. 9, 25-18, 25-22, 25-23.
Coach Diane Chain said the Vaqueros played well in both matches and that the work the team has emphasized in practice is beginning to show more consistently.
“The things we are focusing on in practice are starting to show more consistently in each set,” Chapin said. “I felt we greatly improved in our service game and our offense gets better each match.”
Chapin said outside hitters Emma Masters and Trista Menesini were strong in both matches with Menesini leading the way with 5 kills in each match. Defensively Jocelyn Escartin had 17 digs against South Tahoe, and Grace Chapin and Leah Holmes “are playing tough at the net,” she said.
The Vaqueros were scheduled to host Sparks in their final crossover match Wednesday, and open league play against Lowry at 6 p.m. Friday. Next week they host Smith Valley in a nonleague match at 6 p.m. Tuesday, then travel to Elko at 6 p.m. Friday and Spring Creek at 6 p.m. Saturday.
