With a regional tournament serving as a state qualifier this year, the Fernley High School girls golf team is treating the early events as the groundwork for the finish that matters.
The Vaqueros tied Spring Creek for fifth place at Dayton in the first meet of the season on Sept. 8 with a team score of 451 but were nine strokes out of fourth place and 29 away from third in their opening meet.
Hailey Hall and Isabella Martinez each shot 109, Brylee Harry posted a 113 and Scarlet Garvin added a 120 as the team’s scoring four. Kaia Ressler finished at 124 and Remmi Dunn carded a 129.
The next day at Lowry, Fernley’s team score of 477 placed them sixth. Hall led with a 114, followed by Harry 117, Ressler at 122 and Garvin at 124. Martinez shot 126 and Ainsley Blackorby finished with a 134.
Coach Brian O’Neill said the opening stretch showed how small mistakes can change a round.
“The girls realized that minimizing the big mistake can have such an impact on your score and approach to the next hole,” O’Neill said. “With an end of the season state qualifier, it’s about getting better each time out and peaking at the end of the year.”
This week the Vaqueros were scheduled to play in Northern 3A meets Monday in Spring Creek and Tuesday in Elko. Next week they will play in Fallon on Monday and host the league meet at the Golf Club at Fernley on Tuesday.
