With the team entering its first hard training block of the season, the Fernley High School cross country team turned in several solid individual results at the North Tahoe Madman Mills Motivational meet despite running on heavy legs.
Fernley’s top finishes came from Cael Wilson’s 11th‑place finish in the varsity boys race and Ayden Johnson’s 13th‑place finish in the freshman boys division.
Wilson led the Vaqueros in the 3.3‑mile varsity boys race, placing 11th in 22:28, the top overall finish for Fernley on the day. Daniel Hiles finished 54th in 26:33.
In the 2.8‑mile freshman boys race, Johnson placed 13th in 22:33, giving Fernley its second top‑15 result. Parker Johnson finished 34th in 28:34.
“The kids ran well given the heavy legs,” coach Kristian Slater said. “We were able to get a couple of medals on the boys side with Ayden Johnson in the freshman race and Cael Wilson in the varsity race.”
Fernley’s sophomore boys also ran well in the 2.8‑mile race. Mason Varner placed 23rd in 24:38, Addison Davis finished 27th in 24:58, and Cameron Farr placed 39th in 29:21.
In the varsity girls 3.3‑mile race, Regan Scott led Fernley with a 36th‑place finish in 32:20. JoJo Cardinal placed 47th in 33:52, Wynter Angus finished 58th in 35:19, and Kaylee Nicolas placed 72nd in 39:22.
“We will look to continue our training through the next couple of the weeks and will be racing on heavy legs,” Slater said. “Training is going well and we will look to be getting ready for our first set of 5ks coming soon.”
Next up for the Vaqueros is the Silver State 3K in Boulder City this Saturday.
