Fernley High School launches FIRST Robotics team with $5,000 seed funding

Fernley High School is launching a new student robotics team to compete in the international FIRST Robotics Competition, backed by $5,000 in seed money and a call for community support.

The team, Fernley FIRST Robotics, received its initial funding from the Microsoft Northern Nevada Community Fund, administered by ChangeX.org. Organizers are now seeking an additional $5,000 from local businesses, families and community sponsors to cover startup costs and prepare for the upcoming competition season.

A community information meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 15, for students, parents, prospective mentors and business sponsors to learn about the program, student opportunities and budget needs.

FIRST, an acronym for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, was founded in 1989 by Segway inventor Dean Kamen. The international youth organization hosts team-based robotics competitions designed to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

The high school program gives students hands-on experience in engineering, coding, mechanical design, electronics and project management. The team is open to students interested in building, programming, media, fundraising and business management.

Fernley FIRST Robotics is also recruiting adult volunteers for both technical and nontechnical roles. Technical mentors are needed for mechanical systems, electrical wiring, programming, computer-aided design and fabrication. Nontechnical mentors are needed to assist with fundraising, communications, photography, social media and travel planning.

Organizers said the program was inspired by successful teams in other communities, including Penguin Empire Robotics in Novato, California. The goal is to establish a sustainable, long-term STEM program for Fernley students.

Community members can support the launch by sponsoring the team, donating tools or supplies, or volunteering as mentors.
