The Fernley High School girls soccer team won its second consecutive crossover match against the Northern 3A West with a 9-0 shutout at Sparks on Aug. 27.
Eight different players scored goals for the Vaqueros, led by Sabrina Portillo and Blessing Mhondo with two goals each. Melissa Yokoi, Bronwynn Garrett, Tillie Gillespie, Lilliana Perez, Faith Mhondo and Angel Pochop each had one goal, while Garrett added two assists and Judisa Gonzalez had one.
“They played really well,” coach Tammie Valentine said. “They moved the ball really well, very well passing.”
The Vaqueros’ scheduled game against Wooster on Aug. 24 was canceled because Washoe County schools were closed that day due to the Hawk Fire.
The Vaqueros are now 3-3 overall and were scheduled to play two more crossover games against the West Division this week, at Incline on Tuesday and at home against South Tahoe at 4:45 p.m. Thursday. They also host Truckee at 4:45 p.m. next Wednesday.
