A report of a gun on a school bus Thursday morning turned out to be a novelty pen shaped like a rifle, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office said.
The Sheriff’s Office said it received information at about 8:33 a.m. reporting that a student had a gun on one of the school buses heading for Fernley Intermediate School. Deputies found the bus, where they determined the student had a pen in the shape of an AR-15 style rifle.
Another student saw the pen and reported it to their parent who reported it to the school. The school reported it to the Sheriff’s Office.
LCSO said deputies determined no firearms were on the bus and there is no threat to the students or school staff.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Deputy Zmak at 775-463-6600. The Sheriff’s Office said it also encourages students to speak up in these situations and if they see something, say something.
“Early reporting, response and intervention saves lives,” LCSO said.
