Sports Shorts - Boys and girls soccer teams head to Tahoe for opening tournament

The boys and girls soccer teams will be in South Lake Tahoe this weekend as they begin their seasons at the South Tahoe Boys and Girls Soccer Tournament Aug. 14-15.

Both teams also host Wooster on Aug. 18 and Debbie Smith CTE Academy on Aug. 20.

Girls soccer coach Tammi Valentine said her team has 10 seniors this season after losing only one senior from last year’s squad. They will face Somerset Losee, SECTA, McQueen and Foothill in the tournament at South Tahoe.

“We had a young team last year, and this year’s team is looking a lot older,” Valentine said.

The boys team is scheduled to play Doral Academy Red Rock at 10:30 a.m. and Lowry at 3:45 p.m. Friday, then Faith Lutheran at 10:30 a.m. Saturday and North Valleys at 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

Volleyball team opens in Yerington

The Vaqueros’ volleyball team plays in the Yerington Tournament Aug. 14-15. Five seniors graduated from last year’s team, which was 24-8 overall and finished second at 7-3 in the Northern 3A East.

Coach Diane Chapin said the team has seven returning players and has added six newcomers.

“We did have a really good turnout for tryouts that was made up of 45 girls, and unfortunately we had to cut a few,” she said.

Cross country opens season Aug. 21

The Fernley High School cross country teams will open the season Aug. 21 at the Douglas Class Races. The 2.5-mile race divides runners based on their year in school rather than separating boys and girls.

“Our team this year is looking to be about 15 kids at this time, and we have a lot of potential to do well,” coach Kristian Slater said. “After the first couple of meets, we will see how we stack up with the rest of our division and how the hard work we have been putting in all summer sets us up for a great season.”

West Region champion finishes second at Junior League Softball World Series

Foothill Little League of Palo Cedro, Calif., the team that won the West Region Tournament in Tucson, Ariz., where Fernley played July 24-28, reached the Junior League Softball World Series championship game.

Foothill lost 6-4 to Mallard Creek Little League of Charlotte, N.C., in the championship game Aug. 8 in Kirkland, Wash.
