Great Basin Gas Transmission Company is proposing an expansion project intended to meet growing demand for natural gas in Northern Nevada. The project, titled the “2028 Expansion Project,” would be able to transport up to 777,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day. According to project fact sheets, the proposed expansion is designed to “enhance the availability of reliable, on-demand energy.”
Great Basin Gas Transmission Company plans to build on its existing approximately 898-mile natural gas transmission system. The expansion would include construction of about 200 miles of new pipeline, as well as one new compressor station. The project would be located entirely within northwestern Nevada, including areas near Fernley.
According to the company’s website, it also plans to abandon approximately 142 miles of existing pipeline once the new project is in service. This includes about 124 miles of 16-inch-diameter steel pipeline near Winnemucca, 8 miles of 16-inch-diameter steel pipeline installed in 1989 and 10 miles of 8-inch-diameter pipeline installed in 1964. Additionally, two compressor stations near Pershing County would be abandoned.
The project timeline outlines the steps expected to be completed each year. In 2026, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission pre-filing process is expected to begin, along with public open houses and environmental and cultural field surveys. The FERC National Environmental Policy Act environmental review process would also begin, and the company plans to submit an application to FERC.
In 2027, the FERC environmental review process is expected to continue. Construction could begin in 2028, pending approval. The project is expected to be in service by Nov. 1, 2028.
