Fernley seeks volunteers, community support for future garden project

Fernley seeks volunteers, community support for future garden project

The city of Fernley is continuing to make progress on its future community garden and pumpkin patch, with another round of volunteer cleanup bringing the project one step closer to reality.

Working alongside the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office, an inmate work crew recently joined city staff to remove nonnative elm trees, clear weeds, pick up trash and complete other cleanup efforts at the 11-acre property at 2310 Farm District Road.

While site improvements continue, city officials say the project will be developed in phases as funding, volunteers and resources become available. One of the first priorities is bringing irrigation water across the nearby drainage ditch to the property before garden plots can be established. The city is also pursuing grant opportunities to help fund future improvements.

Officials are encouraging residents, local businesses, nonprofits and community organizations to join the effort by volunteering, donating materials or resources, or partnering with the city as the project moves forward.

“Our goals are to continue cleaning up the property, bring water service to the site and begin building a beautiful community garden that everyone can enjoy for years to come,” the city said in a recent update. “Together, we’re growing more than a garden; we’re growing a stronger community.”

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
