Under the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association’s practice calendar, football is the first fall sport allowed to begin practice.
Football teams were permitted a two-day heat-acclimation period July 27 and 28, during which players practiced in shorts and helmets. Three noncontact practice days were allowed July 29-31, with contact practices in pads allowed to begin Aug. 1.
All other fall sports were allowed to begin practice Aug. 1. The soccer and volleyball teams are scheduled to begin tryouts Monday, Aug. 3.
The first possible day for football scrimmages is Aug. 6, and the first possible day for games is Aug. 13. Players must participate in 10 practices before becoming eligible to play in games.
Fernley is scheduled to participate in a football scrimmage at Bishop Manogue on Aug. 7 and open the season against Coral Academy of Science-Reno on Aug. 14 at Damonte Ranch High School.
The Vaqueros’ first four games are on the road, with trips to Bishop, California, on Aug. 21; Elko on Aug. 28; and Sparks on Sept. 4. Fernley will play its home opener against South Tahoe on Sept. 11.
The boys and girls soccer teams also begin their seasons Aug. 14 at a tournament in South Lake Tahoe.
