Senior Rylie Pearson closed her high school career with the highest individual finish for the Fernley High School swimming team at the 3A State Swimming & Diving Championships in Las Vegas on May 16.
Pearson finished fourth in the girls 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:17.00, more than eight seconds faster than her qualifying time and 13.44 seconds faster than her fifth-place finish at the state meet last season.
Her finish earned five team points, which placed Fernley 12th in the team standings.
Paul Schaeffer wrapped up his high school career by competing in two individual events and a relay at the state meet. He finished sixth in the boys 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.69 and seventh in the boys 500-yard freestyle with a time of 6:15.35.
In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Schaeffer, Brett Vanderkelen, Nicholas Romero, and Matthew Coghlan-Walker, all seniors, placed seventh with a time of 1:49.50.
The boys scored a total of nine points and also placed 12th as a team.
