Fernley boys dominate opening track meet; girls finish second

The Fernley High School boys ran away with the team title at last week’s Fernley Sticker Meet #1 to open the season, piling up 240.5 points to more than double runner up Fallon’s 96. The Fernley girls finished second with 120 points, behind Lowry’s 213.

The Vaquero boys won eight of the 18 events, led by Joe Perkins, who won the 800 meters with a time of 2:08.63 and the 3200 meters in 11:15.87. 

Fernley also controlled the hurdles, with Keeshawn Love taking the 110s in 16.14 and Drostan Reno winning the 300 hurdles in 46.52.

Andrew Peterson won the 400 meters in 56.11, Alex Merell added a win in the 1600 at 5:07.82. The boys’ 4x400 relay team of Elijah Perez, Robert Lewis, Larry Kipkorir and Bryce Dunagan‑Stephens won in 4:00.04. 

In the field events, Kole Miller won the shot put at 41‑10.5 and Jayden Esparza claimed the triple jump at 38‑0.75.

For the girls, Fernley’s 4x400 relay team of Bronwynn Garrett, Alyssa Gromelski, Laura Rosales and Kinley Behrendt earned a win in 4:41.97, and Reese Johnson took the triple jump with a mark of 30‑11.

This week the Vaqueros will host Sticker Meet #2, with field events starting at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday and track events starting at 9:30 a.m.
