After coming short in crunch time in games against Mojave and Bishop Manogue the previous two weeks, the Fernley High School boys basketball team turned that around in a big way against Spanish Springs.

The Vaqueros rallied from a 10-point first half deficit and dominated the fourth quarter in a 54-43 win last Friday night.

Bryce Dunagan-Stephens scored 19 points and Sheldon Jacobson added 15 to lead the Vaqueros.

A hot-shooting first quarter got the Cougars off to a 19-9 lead, with 12 of those points coming off of 3-pointers. But the Vaqueros clamped down on defense in the second quarter and got their own offense going, taking a 25-24 halftime lead on a 3-pointer by Jacobson with 6 seconds left in the quarter.

With the Vaqueros leading 35-32 heading into the fourth quarter, the Vaqueros got 3-pointers by Skyler Ledesma-James, Stephens and Jacobson to kickstart a run that put them up 51-27 with 2:14 left in the game.

In their other game last week, the Vaqueros rolled past Incline, 64-29 in a Northern 3A crossover game.

After leading 22-12 heading into the second quarter, the Vaqueros outscored the Highlanders 22-1 for a 44-13 advantage.

Stephens led the Vaqueros with 18 points, Jacobson scored 11 and Leland Ketelaar added 10 points.

This week the Vaqueros are playing in the 35th Holiday Classic in San Diego, CA, which features five different divisions. Fernley is in the American Division, which is hosted at Carlsbad High School. They play at 8:35 p.m. Friday against ALA-West Foothills (AZ). In their second game, they would play either St. Monica or Lincoln (Stockton, CA). The 16-team bracket also includes Bishop Manogue and Douglas.
