County Commission approves temporary clerk position for Fernley Justice Court

County Commission approves temporary clerk position for Fernley Justice Court

The Lyon County Commission approved a request for a temporary clerk position in the Canal Township Justice Court during its Dec. 4 meeting.

Justice of the Peace Lori Matheus requested the position due to the loss of two full-time clerks in 2025 and the one remaining employee being on intermittent Family and Medical Leave. Her request stated that even with partial consolidation and the shared use of Fernley Municipal Court clerks, staffing levels remain temporarily insufficient. The city employs only three clerks, one of whom was also on intermittent leave prior to her resignation.

As a result, both courts are temporarily operating under significant strain, Matheus said.

The temporary position will be funded by fees the court collects and deposits into its special revenue fund. The court will pay $25 per hour for approximately 988 total hours over a six- to 12-month period.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.
