Vaqueros take second place in Legacy Classic

The Fernley High School boys basketball team finished in second place in the Legacy Classic in Las Vegas last weekend, winning their first three games before losing in overtime to Mojave in the championship game.

The Vaqueros began the tournament with a 71-51 win over Rancho on Dec. 4. They outscored Rancho 22-10 in the second quarter to take a 37-26 halftime lead and extended the margin to 55-36 after three quarters.

On Dec. 5, they beat Faith Lutheran 50-44, riding a strong first quarter to a 17-10 lead and held off the Crusaders after leading 40-29 going into the fourth quarter.

One Dec. 6 the Vaqueros started the day with a 59-51 win over Sierra Vista to reach the championship game. After trailing 10-6, the Vaqueros used a 19-6 second quarter to jump in front 25-16 at the half, led 47-39 after three quarters and maintained their lead in the fourth quarter.

In the championship game, the Vaqueros started hot with a 16-9 lead and were up 46-39 after three quarters, but Mojave rallied to forced overtime with a 59-59 tie, before Mojave pulled out the 69-66 win.

Fernley was scheduled to play Tuesday at South Tahoe in a Northern 3A crossover game, then hosts Bishop Manogue at 6 p.m. Saturday.
