Fernley’s Joe Perkins finished 20th in a field of 278 runners in the Boys Medium 2 heat at the Nike Cross Regionals (NXR) Southwest meet in Mesa, AZ on Nov. 22.
Perkins ran a time of 16.20.9 competing as an unattached runner, meaning he wasn’t part of a team.
Perkins had applied to enter the boys championship race, but was instead placed into the medium-school sized heat.
“It’s a great opportunity if someone likes racing faster people to see how they actually fare against other people, and it’s a good chance for colleges to look at you,” he said.
Perkins said he felt he ran well on the course, which was relatively flat, on a golf course.
Perkins said he also plans to run in a couple of indoor track meets this winter.
“I’m getting ready for spring, just using meets to start training, he said. “I’ll run in one or two races indoors during the winter.”
