Lyon County Democrats donate to local food pantry program to support local students

Staff Report

The Lyon County Democratic Party is collecting money toward the Backpack Food Program coordinated by the Healthy Communities Coalition.

The Backpack Food Program provides elementary students with meals on weekends during the school year.

A list of needed items is provided by the food pantry, and volunteers go shopping to purchase items such as cereal, macaroni & cheese, canned soup, fruit, vegetables, snacks, and canned protein.

While children have free lunches at school, the Backpack program provides food for children who face food insecurity at home over the weekend. Foods are distributed discreetly to the students’ backpacks during a time when they are not in the classroom.

Previously, this backpack program received federal funding, but recent cuts have left the Healthy Communities Coalition scrambling for funding.

Anyone interested in volunteering to help the Lyon County Democrats with the backpack program is asked to contact Judy Zabolocky at (847) 736-4947.

Why does the County have to pay the whole bill? Just my opinion.Comment publication date: 5/7/26, 10:26 AMComment source: Storey County, Tesla partner to extend I-80 Patrick on-rampComment author: Alan ReederComment text: Great guy, laughed easily, had fun with his students, enjoyed our time together at FHS!Comment publication date: 4/23/26, 10:23 PMComment source: Howard David JacksonComment author: Jack & Nancy CookComment text: Wonderful man.
