For the second consecutive season, the Fernley High School boys basketball team has reached the semifinals of the Northern 3A Regional Tournament.

The Vaqueros beat Dayton Thursday night in the tournament’s first round, 65-41, and advance to play today against South Tahoe, at 4:40 p.m. against South Tahoe.

Continuing the hot shooting they have shown in the last two weeks of the regular season, the Vaqueros hit 11 3-pointers, jumping out to a big lead early in the game and maintaining it.

Fernley led 19-9 after a quarter and 35-18 at the half.

“We shot the ball well, we executed and we did everything we wanted to,” coach Derek Miller said.

The winner of tonight’s game advances to tomorrows championship game, and also qualifies for next week’s 3A State Tournament, at Cox Pavilion on the campus of UNLV.

“I’m happy, and I’m hoping we can punch our ticket to go to State,” Miller said. “I feel pretty good about both matchups, and we’ll see if we can shoot the ball well.”
