Led by a third place finish by Joe Perkins, the Fernley High School boys cross country team placed third in the 3A State Championships last Saturday at Rancho San Rafael Park in Reno.

The Vaqueros scored 91 team points to place behind Truckee, which won the meet with 42 points, and Spring Creek with 49.

Perkins took 38 seconds off his fifth-place regional time from the week prior to place third at State with a time of 16:40. Cael Wilson finished 21st for the Vaqueros with a time of 18:26, which was 29 seconds faster than his regional time. Alex Mergell placed 26th with a time of 18:45, Dominick Dietrich came in 28th with a time of 18:53 and Zachary Petersen was Fernley’s fifth scorer in 34th place with a time of 19:13.

In addition, Skyler Ledesma-James placed 49th with a time of 20:50 and Daniel Hiles was 62nd in a time of 21:36.

The girls team thought it had qualified as a team because only two South schools had full teams at the regional meet, but instead the field was reduced to six teams.

Corbyn Gillespie, who was Fernley’s only individual qualifier, placed 42nd with a time of 26:01.
