Longtime Lyon County resident Erich Obermayr, a Democrat, has announced that he will run
for Nevada Assembly, District 39, which covers all of Douglas County and the western
portion of Lyon County.
The District’s approximately 1,100 square mile area includes rural and suburban
communities and extends from the east slope of the Sierra Nevada at Lake Tahoe west to the
Pine Nut Mountains and from Lake Lahontan south to Topaz Lake.
In his 77 years, Obermayr has held a wide range of jobs from dishwasher and factory
laborer to janitor and construction worker, before building a career as a professional
archaeologist and writer focused on Nevada’s history and cultural heritage. His experience
spans minimum-wage work, professional achievement, and the challenges and satisfaction
of owning a small business.
“My life’s experience has given me a deep understanding and appreciation for the struggles
and triumphs of everyday life: putting food on the table, making the rent or house payment,
and guiding the children to a bright, successful future,” said Obermayr. “As your
Assemblyman, I will focus on passing legislation that advances economic opportunity,
health, education, safety, and quality of life for all Nevadans.”
Obermayr emphasized that Nevada families are being squeezed by rising costs and lagging
wages, and he believes the Legislature must take a ground-up approach to problem-solving.
“Our government does have a role in addressing these issues, but only if we start by asking
one question of every bill: How does this make life better for everyday Nevadans?”
Obermayr said. “That’s the philosophy I’ll bring to Carson City.”
Erich and his wife Meg have been residents of Silver City on the Comstock for more than 30
years, where they built their home, raised their daughter, and continue to be active members
of their community. He currently serves as Chair of the Silver City Citizen Advisory Board, a
position he has held for more than 15 years.
