Several Fernley runners showed dramatic improvement over last year as the Fernley High School
cross country team faced its largest meet and the fastest competition of the year last week in
Truckee.
A total of 23 schools fielded full boys teams, and 17 schools had full girls teams with 194 boys
and 145 girls running in the varsity races at the Truckee Invitational, held at the Ponderosa Golf
Course.
Fernley’s top performance was by Joe Perkins, who finished 32nd in the varsity boys race with a
time of 18:00. He beat his time from last year by 4 seconds, when he finished 25th on the same
course
Cael Wilson finished 55th with a time of 18:41, improving from 20:32 and 96th place last year.
Freshman Zachary Petersen finished 57th in 18:45, Alex Mergell came in 105th with a time of
20:14, Skyler Ledesma-James finished 112th in 20:36 and beat last year’s time by 1:07, while
Bodie Parsons was 131st with his time of 21:15.
The boys team compiled 320 team points to place 12th out of 23 teams.
The girls team did not have five runners in the varsity race, so they didn’t place as a team.
Corbyn Gillespie finished 82nd in a time of 24:15, shaving 12 seconds off last year’s time.
Wynter Angus beat her time from last year by 1:10, finished 112th in 26:56. Regan Scott finished
122nd in 28:02 and Jojo Cardinal posted a time of 28:28 to place 126th.
This week, the Vaqueros will run on Saturday at the Leo Mikelonis Memorial Cross Country
Invitational hosted by Spanish Springs at Golden Eagle Park in Sparks. The first race begins at 9
