Soccer teams looking for first league win

The Fernley High School boys soccer team lost to Elko and tied West Wendover in its first two league games of the season last weekend.

The Vaqueros lost 3-1 to Elko on Friday. Leland Ketelaar scored Fernley’s goal. Saturday, the Vaqueros tied West Wendover 1-1. Aiden Mercado scored a goal for Fernley.

The Vaqueros are now 0-7-3 for the season, and 0-1-1 in the Northern 3A West. They are scheduled to play at Spring Creek at 4:45 p.m. Friday and at Lowry at noon Saturday.

The girls soccer team lost its first league game of the season last Saturday, 2-0 at Lowry.

The Buckaroos scored one goal in each half as both defenses were strong throughout. Lowry made 12 shots on goal, compared to Fernley’s four, but Lowry goaltender Riley Ball made saves on all four, including a penalty kick.

The Vaqueros are now 4-7 overall, 0-1 in the Northern 3A West. This week, they are scheduled to host Spring Creek at 5 p.m. Friday and Elko at noon Saturday.
