Letter to the Editor: Respect the Generosity Meant for Burning Man Guests

Letter to the Editor: Respect the Generosity Meant for Burning Man Guests

Dear Editor,

I’d like to extend sincere thanks to the Walmart here in Fernley for providing large dumpsters to support Burning Man participants. Many of these visitors come from out of state, spend a great deal of money in our local businesses, and contribute to Nevada’s economy in meaningful ways. Their presence is a boon to our community, and gestures like Walmart’s help make Fernley a welcoming stop on their journey.

However, I’m troubled by what I witnessed today: two local men unloading construction debris from a box truck and open trailer into the dumpsters clearly intended for Burning Man guests. These were not festival attendees—they were workmen taking advantage of a resource not meant for them. Upon further inspection, I observed all of the dumpsters filled with construction debris.

This kind of behavior is not only disrespectful to Walmart’s generosity, but it also undermines the spirit of hospitality we should be showing to our visitors. Worse, it’s often the same individuals who misuse public goodwill that are quickest to point fingers when things go wrong.

Fernley can, and should, do better. Let’s hold ourselves to a higher standard and ensure that the support offered to our guests is used as intended. Gratitude and integrity go hand in hand.

Sincerely,

Ann Aernecke
