Volleyball: Vaqueros reach semifinals of Yerington tournament

By Robert Perea

The Fernley High School volleyball team won five consecutive matches in the Yerington Volleyball Tournament last weekend, before being knocked off in the semifinals by Spanish Springs.

The Vaqueros defeated Lovelock and Smith Valley on Friday in pool play. In bracket play on Saturday, they beat Reed, Portola and Eureka, all in two sets, before losing two of three sets in the semifinals against Spanish Springs.

“The girls played good both days, especially as the competition got tougher,” coach Diane Chapin said.

Justice Martell-Artiaga made seven kills against Lovelock and eight against Smith Valley on Friday, while Trista Menesini added six against Smith Valley. Menesini had six kills against Reed and Artiaga had nine against Portola. Against Eureka, Artiaga had nine kills, Menesini had seven and Lillianna Young added five.

In the semifinals, the Vaqueros won the first set, but Chapin said they lost their momentum in the second and third sets. Artiaga had seven kills and Emma Masters added five.

“We continue to improve every set,” Chapin said.

The Vaqueros were scheduled to host Truckee Tuesday evening, then they play four times next week, at the Debbie Smith Academy on Sept. 2, at home against Wooster Sept. 3, at Sparks Sept 5 and home against Tonopah Sept. 6. All of those matches are at 6 p.m., except Tonopah, which is 11 a.m.
