The Fernley High School volleyball team avenged an earlier loss to Fallon to win the championship of the South Tahoe Volleyball Tournament last Saturday.
The Vaqueros defeated Fallon 27-25 and 25-16 in the championship match to finish the weekend with a 6-2 record.
Justice Artiaga had six kills and one block, Trista Menesini added five kills and Lillianna Young had four in the championship match for Fernley. Emma Masters passed for 10 assists and Alauna Escartin dished out eight.
The Vaqueros opened the tournament with two wins, beating Spring Creek and Lovelock in two sets each. They finished pool play with a loss to Reed, 27-25 and 25-18. In bracket play, the Vaqueros beat South Tahoe and Elko before losing in two sets to Fallon in the semifinals, but they beat South Tahoe again to get into the championship match, where they beat Fallon.
For the weekend, Menesini led the Vaqueros with 43 total kills, while Artiaga had 38 and Young contributed 20. Grace Chapin had 10 total blocks, while Escartin finished the weekend with 70 assists.
“The girls worked really well together and got better each set,” coach Diane Chapin said.
This weekend the Vaqueros will play in the Yerington Tournament, before they host Truckee next Tuesday.
Soccer
The boys soccer team had a tough opening weekend, going 0-3-1 in their opening tournament at South Tahoe, The Vaqueros tied Lowry 0-0, lost 5-0 to Elko, 6-0 to Sparks and 3-0 to Spanish Springs.
The Vaqueros were scheduled to play at the Debbie Smith CTE Academy Thursday.
The girls soccer team reported only one score over the weekend, a 4-0 loss to Spanish Springs. This week the Vaqueros were scheduled to play at Wooster on Tuesday and host the Debbie Smith CTE Academy Thursday. Next week they host Dayton at 5 p.m. on Monday and Sparks at 5 p.m. Thursday.
