Fernley dancers win gold score awards at national competition

The Fernley Performing Arts studio dancers continued their July winning streak at the Starbound National Talent Competition Finals at Bally’s Lake Tahoe earlier this week, taking away several awards and winning the Studio Spirit Award for the overall competition.

Performing solo dance routines on the intermediate level and taking away high gold scores were Annabella Villa, Caylee Meeks and Bianca Campbell. Bella Bezinque earned an elite gold score for her solo dance routine.

High gold is for scores attaining between 280 and 290 points, while elite gold is for scores between 290 and 300 points, explained Sophie Workman, one of the dancers and an assistant teacher at the studio.

Fernley Performing Arts won three high gold awards and two elite gold awards for team dance routines on the competitive level, with the “Keep Up” group placing third overall on the elite gold level, office manager Mirandy Lewis said.

Group routine members included Sophie Workman, Annabella Villa, Bella Bezinque, Caylee Meeks, Skylar Fitts, Da’Eemah Devold, Iza Van Phoenix, Bianca Campbell, Sandy Bearden, Melody Banuelos, Velei Hale and Trista Wyant.

Laken Boonlua, the studio’s coach leading the competition teams, trained with the Radio City Music Hall’s world-famous Rockettes and ran her own dance studio for 17 years.

All of Fernley Performing Arts performers at the national event were from the studio’s senior competition team, between 14 and 18 years of age. Training for the competition teams is a year-long effort, with training for the next season starting in August, Lewis said.

New classes at the Fernley Performing Arts studio, at a cost of $55 a month, begin on September 2 and are held six days a week. For more information, log onto FernleyPerformingArts.com.
