Sheriff Says Department is Now Fully Staffed

Lyon County Sheriff Brad Pope announced in his social media message of the week that the Sheriff’s Office is now fully staffed.

Pope said LCSO had more than 20 vacant sworn positions in January 2023 but now has none and is operating from a hiring list.

Pope said the Sheriff’s Office will continue to aggressively recruit throughout the region to maintain the hiring list and limit the downtime it takes to fill a position when a deputy retires, resigns, or moves to another law enforcement agency. He said community members with Category 1, which is patrol certification, Category 3 certifications which is detention officers, and veterans will be moved up the list.

“We encourage anyone interested in a career in law enforcement to apply,” Pope said.

Pope said training of deputies is extensive and takes effort from field training officers, dispatchers, and records personnel to train one deputy.

“When a person with zero law enforcement experience is hired, the process of fully training that person to be a patrol deputy can take nearly a year,” he said. “In the detention division, the training process can take over six months.”

Over the past two-and-a-half years, LCSO has graduated an average of six deputies from each Peace Officers Standards Training (POST) academy class. Three Lyon County deputies are attending the current academy class and Pope said all other patrol deputies have their Category 1 certification.

He also said LCSO has begun sending detention deputies to the Category 1 academy, so they have their certification to work patrol and are ready to start field training as soon as a vacancy presents itself.

“The recruitment, hiring, and training processes have been made more efficient, and this is assisting in reducing the amount of time a vacancy is open within the Sheriff’s Office,” Pope said.
