Softball All-Stars sweep District 3 titles

By Robert Perea

All three Fernley Softball Little League All-Star teams won the championship at the District 3 Tournament in Yerington last weekend and will be playing in the State Tournament July 9-13 in Las Vegas.

In the 8-10 year old division, Fernley and Walker River were the only leagues in the district with All-Star teams. Fernley beat Walker River 10-1 on June 25 and 8-1 on June 27 to claim the win. In the June 25 game, Fernley scored nine runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull away for the win. Halia Marrietta had a triple and Ryleigh McKnight hit an inside-the-park grand slam to key the winning rally.

Ashlyn Smythe and Everlee Davis pitched a combined no-hitter. Smythe went the first six innings and struck out 17 batters, then Davis pitched the final inning and struck out three.

In the June 27 game, Fernley didn’t need late dramatics, scoring in each of the first four innings. Cassidy Lis and Marrietta both had three hits to lead Fernley’s attack and Davis struck out 12 of the 21 batters she faced, allowing only two hits and one walk.

In the Little League Division, 10-12 years old, Fernley rolled through the tournament without allowing a run until the championship game, where they beat Elko 5-2.

On June 27, Fernley beat Silverada 15-0 in three innings in the first game. Kendall Sanchez, Lucy Pellett and Lilly Nicholas-Morser each pitched one inning and struck out all three batters they faced. Sanchez also led the offense with two hits and three RBI, while Liliana Leija and Ella Parale each drove in two.

On June 28, Fernley beat Walker River 10-0. Pellett and Aria Parker each drove in two runs, which Sanchez struck out 13 in five innings in the pitcher’s circle.

On June 29, Fernley beat Elko 14-0 as Sanchez threw a perfect game with nine strikeouts while nine different players had a hit, eight scored at least one run and nine drove in at least one run. All 12 players had at least one hit, run or an RBI.

Sanchez strike out 12 more in the championship game win over Elko on June 30. Both teams scored two runs in the first inning, but Fernley got three in the fourth on a two-run single by Parale and a steal of home by Pellett.

Pellett had three hits and drove in three runs while Parale and Addison Lewis had two hits each.
