Mayor issues proclamation honoring Eagle Scout

Mayor Roy Edgington issued a proclamation at the Jan. 11 meeting of the Fernley City Council honoring an Eagle Scout for his contributions to his community,

Edgington issued the proclamation to honor Josiah Thomson, who became the first Eagle Scout of Boy Scout Troop 1783. Edgington also presented Thompson with a key to the city.

Thompson’s Eagle Scout project included an extensive cleanup at the Fernley Cemetery, including removing old shrubs and bushes and planting trees.

Mayor Roy Edgington issued a proclamation in honor of Eagle Scout Josiah Thompson.


Thompson plans on attending college and is now eligible for college scholarships that are for Eagle Scouts only.

The following is the proclamation issued by Edgington:

Proclamation

WHEREAS: the mission of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law, and

WHEREAS: the designation of Eagle Scout is the highest achievement in the Boy Scouting program, which was founded over 100 hundred years ago and only four percent of Boy Scouts are granted this distinguished rank, and

WHEREAS: Josiah Thompson, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1783, has completed the requirements, and was examined by the Eagle Scout Board of Review which found him worthy of the rank of Eagle Scout on October 25, 2016; and

WHEREAS: the Boy Scouts of America encourage Eagle Scout candidates to complete worthy projects to improve their neighborhoods and their communities, and;

WHEREAS: Josiah’s Eagle Scout project included coordinating over 356 volunteer hours to freshen up the Fernley Cemetery by removing old shrubs and planting new shrubs and trees, which is just one example of the many contributions he has made to our community; and

WHEREAS: Josiah Thompson serves as an example to the youth of our community through his high level of personal achievement, leadership and community service and has made the City of Fernley very proud.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Roy Edgington, Mayor of the City of Fernley, do hereby recognize and congratulate Josiah Thompson for his outstanding accomplishment and extend to him our deepest appreciation for all of his dedicated work and wish him the best in all of his future endeavors.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Seal of the City of Fernley, Nevada to be affixed this 8th day of January, two thousand and seventeen.
